Past projects have included removal of alien invasive plants, trail maintenance, removal of overgrown plants in Pfister's Pond, as well as fence/bridge building and repair. Projects have to be planned with and agreed upon by a Tenafly Nature Center staff person. Past Eagle Scout and Gold Award Projects
Tim Castor will be improving the docks on Pfister's Pond. He plans to restore the canoe mooring to its intended purpose. He also plans to improve the floating dock by replacing boards with rope to allow for more flex in the dock and to improve the safety of the structure. He also plans to clear immediate vegetation in the area of the floating dock to combat the effects of succession in the pond.
Nicholas Cytowicz has been updating our Campfire Ring in order to include new benches and a specialized storage shed for campfire materials, complete with gutters to collect rain in barrels placed under the end of the structure.
Katherine Hlinka will be improving our aviaries in order to provide better habitat for the birds. Katherine plans to apply sand to the aviary floors and to paint the aviary exterior. She also plans to replace the section of the fence immediately in front of the aviary in order to provide a better viewing experience of the birds for visitors.
Zachary Kazarian of Troop #316 of New Milford completed his Eagle Project on September 1, 2010. Zachary reconditioned the end of Pfister’s Pond and the area where it flows into the East Brook. This included extensive rock wall building and clearing overgrown vegetation in the pond and stream areas. He also formed a fence to help keep debris in the pond from blocking the drainage into the East Brook. Zachary’s project was ambitious and we appreciate all his hard work!
Thanks to the efforts of these individuals, our nature center will be a more pleasurable place to visit and to educate the public. If you are interested in helping to fund their efforts in support of the Tenafly Nature Center, you may send a donation. Please mail to: Tenafly Nature Center, 313 Hudson Ave., Tenafly, NJ 07670. Checks should be made out to the Tenafly Nature Center. Be sure to include "Scout Service 2010" in the memo line of your check. Any contributions will be greatly appreciated.
