Achievements, Electives, and Awards

We can help your scouts earn any of several nature or environmental science  badges. Though hands-on activities, games, and hikes through the woods your scouts won't realize that they're learning. One badge usually takes a minimum of 1.5 hours. All programs can be done inside and outside. Individual badges/patches that can be completed here will be highlighted in Green. Individual badges/patches that can be worked on here will be highlighted in Brown:

Tiger

Achievement #5- Let's Go Outdoors: There is so much to learn about outdoors! Through these achievement activities your Tiger Cub will develop an appreciation of and respect for the world around him.

Elective 31- Learn About Animals: By doing this activity, Tiger Cubs will not only learn about an animal but will also get to meet a LIVE animal.

*Elective 32- Feed the Birds: This activity encourages Tiger Cubs to learn more about our feathered friends while creating feeders to take home or hang here at TNC.

Elective 33- Cleanup Treasure Hunt: By doing this activity, your Tiger Cub will develop an appreciation of and respect for the world around him while helping to clean up TNC.

Elective 34- Conservation: By doing this activity, your Tiger Cub will become aware of what he uses and encourage him not to waste resources while learning with fun filled activities and hands-on exploration.

Elective 47- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: By doing this activity, your Tiger Cub will become aware of what he uses and encourage him not to waste resources while learning with fun filled activities and hands-on exploration.

Cub Scouting's: Leave No Trace Awareness Award: This award can almost be completed here at TNC however it usually takes 1.5-2 hours.

Wolf

Achievement #7- Your Living World: By doing this activity, your Wolf Pup will develop an appreciation of and respect for the world around him while helping to clean up TNC.

Elective #10- American Indian Lore: Learn how the Native Americans lived and played around the time of first contact with the European "explorers."

Elective #13- Birds: This award can almost be completed here at TNC while your Wolf Pup learns what makes a bird a bird. Through games and hands on activities participants will learn what attributes birds share with each other.

Elective #14- Pets: This award can almost be completed here at TNC while your Wolf Pup learns how much responsibility it takes to care for a pet.

Elective #15-Grow Something: Learn all about the plants that grow in TNC's backyard habitat, help to care for them, and learn how to make your own backyard habitat at home.

Elective #18-Outdoor Adventure: By doing this activity, your scout will develop an appreciation of and respect for the world around him while enjoying fun-filled activities here at TNC.

**Elective #23- Let's Go Camping: Be prepared! Camping can be a fun, learn all about the do's and don't of this outdoor activity before you go on a overnight trip with your fellow scouts, family, or friends.

Cub Scouting's: Leave No Trace Awareness Award: This award can almost be completed here at TNC however it usually takes 1.5-2 hours.

Cub Scout World Conservation Award: This award can almost be completed here at TNC however it usually takes 2 hours.

Bear

Achievement #5- Sharing Your World With Wildlife: Through these achievement activities your Bear Cub will develop an appreciation of and respect for the world around him while enjoying fun-filled activities here at TNC.

Achievement #6- Take Care of Your Planet: By doing this achievement, your Bear Cub will become aware of what he uses and encourage him not to waste resources while learning with fun filled activities and hands-on exploration.

**Achievement #9- What's Cooking?: This achievement is done in conjunction with a campfire program.

**Elective #1- Space: Lean about the night sky, from the planets and constellations to the moons changing face.

Elective #2- Weather: Participants will learn how to predict the weather and how TNC's own weather station works.

*Elective #12- Nature Craft: Learn how nature has and still can inspire creativity in you and others.

*Elective #14- Landscaping: Learn all about the plants that grow in TNC's backyard habitat, help to care for them, and learn how to make your own backyard habitat at home.

Elective #15- Water and Soil Conservation: By doing this activity, your Bear Cub will become aware of what he uses and encourage him not to waste resources while learning with fun filled activities and hands-on exploration.

Webelos

Forester: Visit TNC with your den and take time to notice the forest that surrounds you. You will learn about the forest and why it is important to conserve this land.

Geologist: Located on the palisades you can find all three types of rocks here at TNC.  Learn why they all occur here and they can tell us about our planet.

Naturalist: There is so much to learn about outdoors! Through these achievement activities your scout will develop an appreciation of and respect for the world around him.

Eagle Scouts
Community Service Projects

A limited number of community service projects may be done by middle and high school scouts with adult supervision. Projects may include removal of alien invasive plants, trail maintenance, removal of overgrown plants in Pfister's Pond, fence and bridge building and repair. Projects have to be planned with and agreed upon by a Tenafly Nature Center staff person.
