Seasonal Campfire
Saturday, March 24

Gather ‘round the campfire to experience seasonal changes, listen to stories and roast marshmallows for s’mores. Program is intended for adults and families with children 5 and up. In case of inclement weather, the program will move to the pavilion fireplace. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Guided Nature Walks

1st Sunday of every month

 Enjoy the season with a guided walk along one of TNC’s trails with an environmental educator. Whether a first time visitor or a regular on the trails, participants will enjoy different sensory experiences in the forest.

 

 All ages welcome. In case of inclement weather the program will be postponed to the following month. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Full Moon Hike

February 7. . . . . . . . . . . . . 6:30-8:30 pm

March 8. . . . . . . . . . . . .  7-9 pm

 

By the light of the full moon, experience a guided 2-hour walk through the lost Brook Preserve. The hike is approximately 1½ miles and participants will stop for a quiet rest at the crossroads of the Purple and Allison Trail. This tranquil, meditative hike encourages reflection and connection with nature while experiencing the trails in a new way.

 

Recommended for adults. Please bring a flashlight. In case of inclement weather the program will be postponed to the following month.

Nature Story Hour
3rd Saturday of every month

Families with children ages 3-7 years will enjoy a nature themed story and a visit from one of our education animals. Learn about the characteristics of the animal as well as their story and how they became part of the Nature Center. A new story and animal each month.

 

Meet on the visitor center porch. In case of inclement weather the program will be moved indoors. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Introduction to Snowshoeing
Saturday, February 18  (Adults and Families with children 8 & up) . . . . . . . . . . . . .1-4 pm

 

In this joint program with REI of  Paramus, discover the joy of winter and the freedom of snowshoeing. On this field outing, you'll learn snowshoeing techniques, ascending and descending hills, snow hazard awareness, and winter preparedness. Don't have snowshoes? REI will provide snowshoes, snowshoe poles and professional instruction on proper use of equipment. A short talk on identifying animal tracks found in the forest will be given by a TNC educator. The group will walk for an hour with snowshoes, then come back for a warm fire and hot cocoa.

Adult volunteers and teens 14+ are needed to help with outdoor projects: storm clean up, trail maintenance, invasive plant and litter removal. No experience needed, just a love of  nature.

Pancake Brunch and Maple Sugaring-FULL

Come and enjoy pancakes with real maple syrup fresh from the campfire griddle in our campfire ring! Learn how to identify a maple tree. Discover the  history of syrup making and how technology has changed the gathering of sap over the centuries. The group will check tapped trees and boil down sap to make fresh warm maple syrup- a sweet treat for all to taste. Coffee and hot cocoa will be served with pancakes.

 

Program intended for adults and families with children 5 and up. Dress warmly; program will be both in and outdoors. In case of inclement weather, the  program will be held under cover. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

 

Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

Animal Sweethearts

Humans aren’t the only ones who feel the love. Come meet some of TNC’s live animal pairs and learn all about attraction and pair bonding in the animal kingdom. Program will be held in the visitor’s center and will include a story, craft and game.

 

Program is intended for families with children of all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held indoors.

Winter Break Camp
February 20, 21, 22, 23, 24

Pre-K & K:     9 am-noon or 12:30-3:30 pm

1st-5th grade:    9 am -3:30 pm

 

When school is out, kids can keep learning and have fun. Children will explore TNC woods and trails, make crafts, share stories and play games while learning about the environment. Activities include searching for animal tracks, making and tasting real maple syrup, eating s’mores around a campfire, and lots more.

 

Children should bring a refillable water bottle, snack, and lunch for the full day programs. Winter gear recommended (snow pants, boots, gloves etc.). Program held snow or shine. Children may attend individual days. A Camp Medical Release must be completed and returned before camp begins; click on the following links for the forms (in pdf format).

Be sure to sign up early; space is limited and pre-registration is required. Current family membership ($50) is required for TNC camps. Not a member? Join or renew now and take advantage of what the nature center offers all year round.

The Nature Program Cooperative

Throughout the year, different partners of the Co-op will host an outdoor activity or indoor educational program at a nature center or other appropriate location to which all group members are invited. When applicable, member discounts will apply to all Co-op partner members and supporters. For example, when Tenafly Nature Center hosts an event, members of all other groups pay the TNC member rate. Non-members are also welcome to attend.  All events will be advertised in each group’s newsletter.
