Family Nature Walks

Sundays, July 6, August 3, *September 7. . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3:30-4:30 pm

Enjoy the season during a leisurely guided walk along one of our many trails with an Environmental Educator.  Discover new things in the forest each month, whether you are a first time visitor or someone who regularly enjoys our trails.  Different seasonal topics and activities will take place each month.  In case of inclement weather the program is cancelled. Program intended for adults and families and all ages are welcome, however all children must be accompanied by an adult.

Reminder:  No strollers on TNC trails please.
Groups please refer to the group program information.
Pre-registration is not required but requested.
Members: FREE;
Nonmembers: $5 per person.

National Public Lands Day
Volunteers Needed

Saturday, September 27. . . . . . . . . . . . . .10 am - noon

Stand up and do something for our natural resources this year.  Spare just two hours for the  environment! Help with outdoor projects on and around the trails: groom trails and pick up litter. Rather work indoors? Stuff envelopes and work in the office! No experience needed. Bring your friends and family!

Seasonal Scavenger Hunt

Saturday, July 5 and/or Sunday, August 24. . . . . . . . . . . . . . arrive anytime between 2-4 pm

Using a set of clues, your family will journey along a trail at the Tenafly Nature Center searching for answers to a set of natural riddles. You will help each other find the solutions while having a great time enjoying the outdoors. After you have finished answering all the riddles along the trail we will meet back at the visitors center where a naturalist will review the answers and give everyone a prize. In case of inclement weather, program is cancelled. Intended for adults and families with children 4 years and older. Pre-registration not required, but requested.

Members $5; Family maximum $20
Non-members $10; Family maximum $30

Little Naturalists

21/2 & 3 year olds with an adult

Thursday Series:

Young children, each with a special adult, join a TNC educator as she explores the natural world. You’ll guide your child through discovery stations, sing, pretend, and journey outside. Program is under cover if raining, but dress for the weather. No strollers or siblings, please. Space is limited; Preference given to current members or new members joining at the time of registration (click here to join).

Fees are per child/adult pair

Bats for Beginners

Discover how bats play a vital ecological role as the only flying mammal in NJ. After an indoor introduction we’ll head outside for a short walk in search of these nocturnal marvels. For adults and families with children 5 years and older. Space is limited! Pre-registration required. In case of rain, program will be rescheduled.

Pond Discovery

Bats, bugs, and frogs. . . Oh my! Investigate what creatures live in and around Pfister's Pond. Dress to get dirty. In case of inclement weather the program is cancelled. Program intended for adults & families with children 5 years and older. Pre-registration not required, but requested.

Apple Cider Making

12:30-1:30 pm or 2:00-3:00 pm

Imagine fresh crisp apple cider!  The only way to get it is to help make it yourself—that is what we’ll do in this “bring-your-own” program. Pre-registration not required, but requested. Rain or shine. *Sign up for a Family Nature Walk after you make cider.

Autumn Family Campfire

Animal Cool Bus

After school  4-5 pm

Tuesday Series:
September 15, 22 & 29; October 6, 13 & 20

Learn about a huge assortment of animals including reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, and creatures from the sea.  Educators from Snakes-n-scales educators will bring species such as alligators, starfish, snakes, giant millipedes, turtles, and much more. Enjoy animal related games, activities, hands on materials, and of course many of the animals are touchable!! Series for children ages 5-9 yrs. Programs are intended for kids only; pre-K parents may stay without strollers or siblings. Space is limited.  Pre-Registration Required.  Preference given to current members or new members joining at the time of registration (click here to join). Rain or shine.

Expedition Alaska: The Experience
Presented by Phil Germakian, TNC Environmental Educator

This June, Phil studied and re-sighted black-legged kittiwakes, a migratory sea bird in Alaska on a US Fish & Wildlife expedition. With slides and hands-on artifacts,  he will describe his field research. You will learn about how he helped track migratory patterns and breeding habits to determine ecosystem health. Phil will explain how the Earthwatch Institute helped him and how you can get involved for a sustainable future.

Downhill Hiking in Switzerland

Presented by Steven Gordon, TNC Volunteer

Hiking can be great fun, but tall mountains can be extremely demanding. Learn about the most beautiful mountains and valleys in Switzerland--with amazing curved rock walls, rolling green hills, and valleys of amazing wildflowers and roaring streams--that can be hiked through with little or no uphill hiking. Steven is an inventor and author of 20 books; his most recent one: How to be Happy.

Lectures are intended for people over the age of 18. Younger people may be admitted if they call ahead of time to request permission. Each program is designed to nurture those of us who never stop learning.

Coyotes in NJ
Presented by Tony McBride, NJ Dept. of Fish & Wildlife

Thursday, August 14 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7:00-8:30 p.m.

Learn about the natural history of the Eastern Coyote, Canis latrans, in NJ. Guest lecturer, Tony McBride, Principal Biologist of the New Jersey Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, will present information about the damage coyotes can cause in NJ and techniques used to mitigate it. TNC Director, Jennifer Kleinbaum, will also be available to provide information about local sightings.

Hard Cider: A History
Presented by Debora Davidson, TNC Education Director

Discover the history behind a favorite American beverage. Learn about apple cider fermentation and the genetics of this pome fruit. Discuss the importance of apples in colonial history, mythology, and literature as you make your own apple cider with our hand-cranked apple cider press. Space and apples are limited; pre-registration required. Participants must be over 21.
