Our Seasonal Programs are the perfect way for families and adults to enjoy the seasons with TNC! 


  • For assistance with registration and information on our policies, please visit our Registration and Policies page.
  •  This symbol indicates that the program is held on surfaces that are accessible for people with mobility challenges.
  • TNC staff can adapt most programs for people of many different abilities. To request assistance of any type, please let us know a week in advance so we can ensure each person enjoys nature to its fullest.
  • We present these programs for families and adults. If you are part of a group of 10 or more participants and are
    interested in public program topics below, please contact our Education Director to organize a program for your group.

    Calling all nature-loving readers! StoryWalk® is an interactive outdoor exhibit that turns reading into an adventure along the trails without electronic devices. Hikers can read a nature-themed story while they walk in the woods. Designed for beginning readers, the stories will appeal to all ages. Tenafly Nature Center will post a new story, page by page, along a trail each season. Free!


    To preview the story, register for the Nature Story Time program at 11:45 am on December 12, which will introduce the new StoryWalk®

    The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT, and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg Hubbard Library.

    Young children, 1 ½ to 3 years old, with an adult will explore the natural world through a series of topics lead by a Tenafly Nature Center Environmental Educator. Each week has a different focus emphasizing working together through discovery stations, songs and journeys outside. Eight week series on Wednesdays.

    Hooting for Owls

    Fantastic Frogs

    Please note this option is to sign up for the full eight weeks! There is no class on February 17, and the series ends on March 9.
     
    No strollers or unregistered siblings, please. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held under cover. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Fees are per adults/child pair. Additional family members pay half of the fee.

    Children in Pre-K & K (4-7 years old) will learn about the wonders of the natural world by visiting with Tenafly Nature Center Animal Ambassadors, exploring plant and animal exhibits, and hiking along the trails. After school series for eight weeks on Wednesdays.

    Adults and families with children 10 and up- join in the Great Backyard Bird Count! Participate in this important citizen science project to tally the birds who live at TNC. Join a Tenafly Nature Center Environmental Educator for a short review of key bird identification marks. The group will observe birds at our feeders, followed by a short walk on the trails to look for birds that winter at Tenafly Nature Center. 



    Participants will log and count the birds observed and results will be submitted to the Great Backyard Bird Count at gbbc.birdcount.org.

    Children must be accompanied by an adult. Bring binoculars if you have them; if not we can loan you a pair. Rain or shine.

    Adults and families with children 4 and up join a Tenafly Nature Center Environmental Educator to meet live animals to learn about their sweethearts, make animal valentines and decorate a cookie during the fun Valentine's Day program.

    Families will receive a set of clues to help solve nature riddles along Nature Center trails. Each family will need to work as a team as they hike along the trails to complete the hunt and receive a small prize. Program is intended for adults and families with children 4 and up.     In case of inclement weather the program will be cancelled.

    Our mandatory TNC Health Packet is due by Monday, February 8; a participant daily checklist can be found on our vacation day camp web page. Failure to submit the TNC Mandatory Health Packet by the due date will result in forfeiture of registration fee.

    Experience a guided 2-hour walk (1½ miles) along the trails by the light of the full moon. Participants will stop for a rest at the crossroads of the Purple and Allison Trail. This tranquil, meditative hike encourages reflection and connection with nature, allowing hikers to experience the trails after dark. Recommended for adults.




    Pre-registration required. Please bring a flashlight. In case of inclement weather the program will be postponed to the following month.

    2016 Signature Event: Stay Close to Nature
    Hey Kids 4 and up! Leave the parents at home this evening and visit Tenafly Nature Center! Children will have a meal and participate in fun activities with a Tenafly Nature Center Environmental Educator while parents enjoy some time to relax or have an evening out. Activities each evening will include crafts, a night hike, trail games, animal encounters and a campfire with s'mores.


    Drop-off program. Layers and winter gear recommended (snow pants, boots, gloves, etc.). In case of inclement weather, the program will be held under cover. We'll provide a pizza dinner or a hot dog cookout. Children should bring a refillable water bottle. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

    Participants will use flashlights to search the small pond near Tenafly Nature Center's Vistor Center for Spotted Salamanders that have emerged from their underground burrows. Date and time are variable dependent on when TNC spots the first salamander of the season. To join TNC for this members-only annual event, please e-mail us your name and phone number and we'll contact you when the weather is right.

    Is your child a natural born scientist? Adventure seeker? Out of the box thinker? If so, sign your child up for exploration central where we will begin examining the mysteries of life. How do small seeds become tall trees? Why do flowers smell? Why do animals camouflage? Explorers will head out into the forest to find answers to these perplexing questions!


    • Use the grade your child is entering next September to determine group.
    • Campers may attend multiple weeks. Each week will feature different activities.
    • Pre-K (4-5 year olds) & Kindergarten may attend half-day sessions. These run from 9:00 am-12:30 pm or 12:00-3:30 pm.
    • After registering, primary guardian will receive confirmation emails.
    • Be sure to sign up early; space is limited and pre-registration is required.

    Extended Care may be provided before and after camp for an additional fee. This is not an extended camp experience. During this time campers participate in supervised, self-directed, indoor activities.

    • Pre-Care: 8:00-9:00 am, $60 per camper per week.
    • Post-Care: 3:30-5:00 pm, $75 per camper per week.
    • If registering for both Pre- and Post-Care, fee is discounted to $125 per week.

    To Register:

    1. Current annual Family Membership ($60) is required for all participants in our camp programs.

      New Jersey state law requires that campers submit a current health record each year; please provide written documentation if your child is not vaccinated for medical or religious reasons.

    Being hairy is not so scary! Campers will discover what it means to be a mammal, and learn to identify what their characteristics are (including ourselves). We will also explore the diversity of different mammal types through animal visits. Come trek our woods in search of our furry friends and any evidence they leave behind.

    • Use the grade your child is entering next September to determine group.
    • Campers may attend multiple weeks. Each week will feature different activities.
    • Pre-K (4-5 year olds) & Kindergarten may attend half-day sessions. These run from 9:00 am-12:30 pm or 12:00-3:30 pm.

    Plants are just about everywhere; rain forests, grasslands, and even the desert! They belong to an amazing kingdom! Campers will develop an appreciation for all life stages of plants, from seeds to trees. By learning to identify plants common to New Jersey as well as plants that we use in our lives, campers will appreciate the persistence of plants.

    • Campers may attend multiple weeks. Each week will feature different activities.
    • Pre-K (4-5 year olds) & Kindergarten may attend half-day sessions. These run from 9:00 am-12:30 pm or 12:00-3:30 pm.

    This week-long Pre-K/K (4-5 yrs.) day camp session runs from July 18-22, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm daily.

    Humans have homes, animals have habitats! Campers will investigate the various habitats of animals found at the TNC, from frog to fish to fox. Each day is an experience and a discovery as they are introduced to insects, mammals, amphibians and reptiles native to our woods. Stories, puppet shows, games, arts & crafts and guided hikes will round out our week.

    • Campers may attend multiple weeks. Each week will feature different activities.
    • Pre-K (4-5 year olds) & Kindergarten may attend half-day sessions. These run from 9:00 am-12:30 pm or 12:00-3:30 pm.

    How long can a person live without a cell phone? A TV? A computer? Could you survive in the woods with just your skills and what you carry? Would you know what to do if you got lost in the woods? Campers develop wilderness skills as they figure out how to properly start a campfire, read trails, construct a survival shelter, identify edibles, and employ map and compass skills.

    Almost as important as knowing your home address is knowing your watershed address. When water goes down the drain, do you know where it goes? Campers will investigate the water cycle and our role in it as we tap the cycle to make use of water for our own needs! Campers will also have an opportunity to explore a pond ecosystem.

    Thunder, lightning and hail, oh my! When skies grow dark and ominous, we watch in fear and awe to see what is unleashed.
