Our Seasonal Programs are the perfect way for families and adults to enjoy the seasons with TNC! 


  • For assistance with registration and information on our policies, please visit our Registration and Policies page.
  •  This symbol indicates that the program is held on surfaces that are accessible for people with mobility challenges.
  • TNC staff can adapt most programs for people of many different abilities. To request assistance of any type, please let us know a week in advance so we can ensure each person enjoys nature to its fullest.
  • We present these programs for families and adults. If you are part of a group of 10 or more participants and are
    interested in public program topics below, please contact our Education Director to organize a program for your group.

    Enjoy the season with a guided walk along one of TNC’s trails with an Environmental Educator. Whether a first time visitor or a regular on the trails, participants will enjoy different sensory experiences in the forest each month. All ages welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

    Families will receive a set of clues to help solve nature riddles along Nature Center trails. Each family will need to work as a team as they hike along the trails to complete the hunt and receive a small prize. Program is intended for adults and children 4 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

    In case of inclement weather the program will be cancelled.

    Families with children ages 3-7 will enjoy a nature-themed story and a visit from one of TNC’s Animal Ambassadors. Learn about the animal and how they came to Tenafly Nature Center. A new story and animal are featured each month. Animals may include snakes, frogs, turtles, owls or a hawk. 



    Meet on the Visitor Center porch. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held under cover. Children must be accompanied by an adult, who may attend for free.

    3rd Saturday of the month

    After the indoor program, participants can experience the story in a new way, reading it as they follow StoryWalk® postings along a trail.

    Gather ‘round the campfire to explore seasonal changes, listen to stores, and roast marshmallows for s'mores. A Tenafly Nature Center Environmental Educator will lead participants on a short walk along the trails in the forest without flashlights to develop night vision, play games, and listen for animals. Program is intended for adults and families with children 5 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

    Experience a guided 2-hour walk (1½ miles) along the trails by the light of the full moon. Participants will stop for a rest at the crossroads of the Purple and Allison Trail. This tranquil, meditative hike encourages reflection and connection with nature, allowing hikers to experience the trails after dark. Recommended for adults.




    Pre-registration required. Please bring a flashlight. In case of inclement weather the program will be postponed to the following month.

    Arrive early when it’s still light and meet several live forest creatures. Last year’s creatures included a fox, flying squirrels, and a porcupine. Come after dark and learn how animals adapt to their environment. Tenafly Nature Center Enviornmental Educators will lead small groups of all ages on the trails to meet the forest folk. Designed to be entertaining and educational- not scary. Tours take 1.5 hours.


    Enjoy refreshments and crafts around the campfire. No strollers please. Children must be accompanied by an adult. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held under cover, but dress for the weather. Space is limited and pre-registration is highly recommended; walk-ins will be accepted as space allows but cannot be guaranteed a tour. Family or Scout groups should register in advance to reserve a tour time together. Children under two are free.

    Bones, fur and feathers, and fun! This off-beat seasonal program will be an in-depth study of owls. Families with children 3 and up will meet a live owl, explore their eating habits, and examine a real owl pellet-bones and all! Then create an edible "owl pellet" and a spooky green "potion" to drink!

Each family will need to work as a team as they hike along the trails to complete the hunt and receive a small prize. Program is intended for adults and families with children 4 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

    In case of inclement weather the program will be cancelled.

    Adults and families with children 3 and up can discover the real lives of wild turkeys. Learn about hens, toms, poults, caruncles, wattles, and snoods. Join a Tenafly Nature Center Environmental Educator and perform the turkey strut and learn the turkey call! Make a terrific turkey to take home.



    Children must be accompanied by an adult. Rain or shine.

    Experience a guided 2-hour walk (1½ miles) along the trails by the light of the full moon. Participants will stop for a rest at the crossroads of the Purple and Allison Trail. This tranquil, meditative hike encourages reflection and connection with nature, allowing hikers to experience the trails after dark. Recommended for adults.




    Pre-registration required. Please bring a flashlight. In case of inclement weather the program will be postponed to the following month.

    Enjoy the season with a guided walk along one of TNC’s trails with an Environmental Educator. Whether a first time visitor or a regular on the trails, participants will enjoy different sensory experiences in the forest each month. All ages welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

    Winter is a time of year to be cozy and crafty. Adults and families with children 5 and up will join a Tenafly Nature Center Environmental Educator to design winter decorations using natural materials. The program begins in the Visitor Center where participants will design winter decorations and seasonal ornaments. 





    Afterwards the group will adjourn to the pavilion for s'mores and hot cocoa in front of a cozy fire.
