Our Seasonal Programs are the perfect way for families and adults to enjoy the seasons with TNC! 


  • For assistance with registration and information on our policies, please visit our Registration and Policies page.
  •  This symbol indicates that the program is held on surfaces that are accessible for people with mobility challenges.
  • TNC staff can adapt most programs for people of many different abilities. To request assistance of any type, please let us know a week in advance so we can ensure each person enjoys nature to its fullest.
  • We present these programs for families and adults. If you are part of a group of 10 or more participants and are
    interested in public program topics below, please contact our Education Director to organize a program for your group.

    Experience the taste of fresh, crisp apple cider! Participants will use an apple press to help make cider and learn about the history of apple cultivation and cider making. Tenafly Nature Center will provide the apples, but more apples mean more cider! Help us out by bringing three or more apples per person. All ages welcome.

    Explore the creepy, crawly animals of the night! Adults and families with children 4 and up can come to Tenafly Nature Center to explore nocturnal creatures and their habits. Meet some of Tenafly Nature Center's Animal Ambassadors of the dark. Craft a spooky nocturnal animal mask to surprise your friends.

    Stretch your legs and explore the trails and forest at Tenafly Nature Center after a day at school. Children ages 8- 12 will hike and investigate the woods with a Tenafly Nature Center Environmental Educator. Learn about pond creatures, birds, invertebrates, and trees and plants.

    Enjoy the season with a guided walk along one of TNC’s trails with an Environmental Educator. Whether a first time visitor or a regular on the trails, participants will enjoy different sensory experiences in the forest each month. All ages welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

    • McCandless Room (near Library) in the Municipal Center, 100 Riveredge Road, Tenafly
    Trees are treasured for their beauty, shade and oxygen. When trees become victims of storms or old age they can cause property damage or hazards. During this free program for adults, learn how to take care of them and identify a possible threat. A visit from a local shade tree expert will clarify these issues and will help you determine when to seek advice from an expert.





    In cooperation with the Tenafly Environmental Commission and Green Team, Tenafly Nature Center will provide residents and interested parties with a series of free lectures and round table discussions regarding local environmental concerns and curiosities. First Wednesday of the Month.

    By the light of the full moon, experience a guided 2-hour walk (approximately 1½ miles) along the trails. Participants will stop for a rest at the crossroads of the Purple and Allison Trail. This tranquil, meditative hike encourages reflection and connection with nature allowing hikers to experience the trails after dark. Recommended for adults.



    Pre-registration required. Please bring a flashlight. In case of inclement weather the program will be postponed to the following month.

    Families will receive a set of clues to help solve nature riddles along Nature Center trails. Each family will need to work as a team as they hike along the trails to complete the hunt and receive a small prize. Program is intended for adults and children 4 and up.




    Please arrive between 2 and 3 pm.

    In case of inclement weather the program will be cancelled.

    Families with children ages 3-7 will enjoy a nature-themed story and a visit from one of TNC’s Animal Ambassadors. Learn about the animal and how they came to Tenafly Nature Center. A new story and animal are featured each month. Animals may include snakes, frogs, turtles, owls or a hawk. Children must be accompanied by an adult. 


    Meet on the visitor center porch. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held under cover. Adults attend for free.

    Children ages 5-10 can meet some of Tenafly Nature Center's Animal Ambassadors and participate in fun and active indoor and outdoor games. Explore the trail with a Tenafly Nature Center Environmental Educator on a winter afternoon hike. Return to the paviliion to warm up by the campfire and enjoy a s'mores treat!


    Drop-off program. Children should bring a refillable water bottle and one snack. Layers and winter gear recommended (snow pants, boots, gloves, etc.). Rain or shine. Children may attend individual days. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. One day or both days may be chosen.

    Winter is a time of year to be cozy and crafty. Adults and families with children 5 and up will join a Tenafly Nature Center Environmental Educator to design winter decorations using natural materials. The program begins in the Visitor Center where participants will design winter decorations and seasonal ornaments. 




    Afterwards the group will adjourn to the pavilion for s'mores and hot cocoa in front of a cozy fire.


    Meet in the Visitor Center. Children must be accompanied by an adult. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held under cover. Space is limited and pre-registration required.

    Families with children ages 3-7 will enjoy a nature-themed story and a visit from one of TNC’s Animal Ambassadors. Learn about the animal and how they came to Tenafly Nature Center. A new story and animal are featured each month. Animals may include snakes, frogs, turtles, owls or a hawk. Children must be accompanied by an adult. 


    Meet on the visitor center porch. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held under cover. Adults attend for free.

    When school is out, 1st-5th grade kids can keep learning and have fun too! Children will explore TNC woods and trails, make crafts, share stories and play games while learning about the environment. 




    Winter-themed activities include searching for animal tracks, eating s’mores around the campfire and more. Sign up early. Don't let your child miss out on fun, hands-on nature experiences, outdoor discovery, and the chance to explore our native hardwood forest and pond ecosystems.


    Children should bring a refillable water bottle, two snacks, and lunch. Layers and winter gear recommended (snow pants, boots, gloves, etc.). Rain or shine. Children may attend individual days.

    Our mandatory TNC Health Packet is due by Monday, December 22; a participant daily checklist can be found on our vacation day camp web page.

    Be sure to sign up early; space is limited.  Pre-registration required. Current family membership ($60) is required for TNC camps. Not a member? Join or renew now and take advantage of what the nature center offers all year round.
