Our Seasonal Programs are the perfect way for families and adults to enjoy the seasons with TNC! 
  • For assistance with registration and information on our policies, please visit our Registration and Policies page.
  •  This symbol indicates that the program is held on surfaces that are accessible for people with mobility challenges.
  • TNC staff can adapt most programs for people of many different abilities. To request assistance of any type, please let us know a week in advance so we can ensure each person enjoys nature to its fullest.
  • We present these programs for families and adults. If you are part of a group of 10 or more participants and are
    interested in public program topics below, please contact our Education Director to organize a program for your group.

    • TNC Trails
    Calling all nature-loving readers! StoryWalk® is an interactive outdoor exhibit that turns reading into an adventure along the trails without electronic devices. Hikers can read a nature-themed story while they walk in the woods. Designed for beginning readers, the stories will appeal to all ages. Tenafly Nature Center will post a new story, page by page, along a trail each season. Free!

    Join our own Elizabeth Hinckley, naturalist and certified yoga instructor, for Nature Yoga! Through a series of physical explorations and mindfulness techniques, participants will have the chance to unwind and connect with the natural world and the self surrounded by the sights, sounds, and scents of nature in our covered pavilion.  Each week will explore a new nature theme.  Drop in to any single class or sign up for all 6! Adult students of any ability welcome. Rain or Shine! Check in at the Pavilion.

    STEM Wars 

    Come to the STEM side. Teens will explore the advantages of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math skills. They may discover their passion for Science while hitting the trails at camp. Scientists will work together testing their hypothesis and learn about natural selection, adaptation and genetic mutations.

    Three week-long 6th-8th day camp sessions available. Each week runs from, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm daily.

    1. Survivor: August 7-11
    2. STEM Wars: August 14-18
    3. Undercover Biologists: August 21-25
    • Use the grade your child is entering next September to determine group.
    • Campers may attend multiple weeks. Each week will feature different activities.
    • After registering, primary guardian will receive confirmation emails.
    • Be sure to sign up early; space is limited and pre-registration is required.
    • Extended Care may be provided before and after camp for an additional fee. This is not an extended camp experience. During this time campers participate in supervised, self-directed, indoor activities.
      • Pre-Care: 8:00-9:00 am, $60 per camper per week.
      • Post-Care: 3:30-5:00 pm, $75 per camper per week.
      • If registering for both Pre- and Post-Care, fee is discounted to $125 per week.

    STEM up to the Plate 

    Scientists will study weather using Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Patterns in weather allow us to make predictions about what happens next. In addition, campers have a chance to discuss weather phenomenon from ball lightning to Super Storms like Hurricane Sandy.

    Nine week-long 3rd-5th day camp sessions available. Each week runs from, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm daily.

    3. Monsters of the Deep Blue Sea: July 10-14
    4. Transformers in the Wild: July 17-21
    5. Blinded me with Science: July 24-28

      Families with children ages 3-7 will enjoy a nature-themed story and a visit from one of TNC’s Animal Ambassadors. Learn about the animal and how they came to TNC. A new story and animal are featured each month. Animals may include snakes, frogs, turtles, owls or a hawk.

      Meet on the Visitor Center porch. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held under cover. Children must be accompanied by an adult who may attend for free.

      Fees are per child.

      Opening to the public August 19th, 2017.

      Come visit our new 12 x 24' butterfly house filled with native butterflies. This new Butterfly house offers visitors a total immersion experience for the young and old as it introduces visitors to the wonders of metamorphosis. 


      This seasonal exhibit showcases several beautifully colored butterflies sipping nectar and taking flight, offering guests the opportunity to better understand and appreciate their life cycle and importance to the ecosystem. Inside the exhibit you will be welcome to chat with staff or volunteers, ask questions, or simply relax and enjoy the space while butterflies flit and fly about. See if a butterfly will land on your nectar stick or just watch them fly around you as they move between nectar plants. Observe butterfly chrysalis in the chrysalis box. Maybe you will be lucky enough to see a butterfly emerge!

      Visitors are encouraged to show off pictures of their visit on social media using the #ButterflyTNC

      Open Wednesday through Sunday 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. The Butterfly House will close in October (closing date is weather dependent).

      • Non-members: $5 (for 1 adult and 2 children).
      • Additional Children: $5 (for up to 3)*
      • Young children who will be held off the floor by an adult the entire time inside the house are free.

      Undercover Biologists 

      It’s all around us every time we turn on the TV: climate change, drought, wild fire, starving polar bears, water shortage. Why is this happening and how can we stop it? Students will collectively explore some of the most important issues perplexing scientists, governments and communities. We’ll figure out how we can cope with these issues and lessen their impact.

      Wild Skies 

      The most coveted superpower is the ability to fly. Birds can do it and so can bees. This week will focus on animals that have evolved to fly, as well as how humans learned to mimic their winged friends and take to the skies. Observation skills will be fostered as campers get into sky-related topics such as bird behavior, space, weather and the water cycle. Campers will gain a better understanding of the workings of the world above.

      Track it Down!

      Was that a raccoon or a fox? Did you hear a bluejay or a red-tailed hawk? This week campers will become detectives and uncover the secrets of the forest. There will be mysteries needed to be solved and discover the truth of what animals do when we are not looking.

        Scales and Tails

        What amazing critters have scales and tails? Campers will check out animals of the past and present with tales of the lives of these radical reptilians. Each day will focus on a different group of scaled species and the lives they live.

        Seven week-long Pre-K & Kindergarten (4-5 yrs.) day camp sessions available. Each week runs from, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm daily (with AM (9:00 am-12:30 pm) or PM (12:00-3:30 pm) half day options available).

        Colors of the Wind

        Nature creates a beautiful landscape filled with vivid greens, brilliant blues, and the warm shades of autumn. Feathers and flowers may seem showy, but they carry important messages. Color can mean the difference between life and death! Campers will decipher the meaning of color, explore its role in nature, and search for examples on the trails.

The instructor is a registered Merit Badge Counselor. This program is intended for members of the Boy Scouts of America.

General philosophical or moral objection to immunization shall not be sufficient for an exemption on religious grounds.
            • A copy of your insurance card.
            • A copy of any information regarding your child's activity restrictions/special needs (ex. IEP, ISFP).
          2. Complete the form submission through CAMPDOCS 7 days prior to the start of the camp session. New Jersey state law requires that campers submit a current health record each year.
          3. Failure to submit all forms to TNC 7 days before the first day of camp will result in forfeiture of your registration fee.

          Discover the natural terrain of the Tenafly Nature Center. Experience sections of the trail as you navigate over roots, rocks and streams, through Tenafly Nature Center’s nearly 400 acres of wetlands and hardwood forest.  Introducing for the first time our children’s fun run, a quarter of a mile obstacle run around our yellow trail. 

           

          All proceeds will support Tenafly Nature Center’s mission to protect open space on and off the trails and to provide environmental education programs.

          Winter is a time of year to be cozy and crafty. Adults and families with children 5 and up will join a Tenafly Nature Center Environmental Educator to design winter decorations using natural materials. The program begins in the Visitor Center where participants will design winter decorations and seasonal ornaments. 

          Afterwards the group will adjourn to the pavilion for s'mores and hot cocoa in front of a cozy fire.

          Experience a guided 2-hour walk (1½ miles) along the trails by the light of the full moon. Participants will stop for a rest at the crossroads of the Purple and Allison Trail. This tranquil, meditative hike encourages reflection and connection with nature, allowing hikers to experience the trails after dark. Recommended for adults.

          Space still available! Please arrive 15 minutes to start time (6:45pm) to register in person. We leave promptly at 7:00pm for the hike. 

          Pre-registration required. Please bring a flashlight. In case of inclement weather the program will be postponed to the following month.
