Our Seasonal Programs are the perfect way for families and adults to enjoy the seasons with TNC!

    This week-long 1st-3rd camp session runs from August 4 to August 8, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm daily. Survival Camp! What child doesn’t dream of living in the wild woods as Brian does in Hatchet or raising a wild peregrine falcon as your sole companion surviving in the Catskills as Sam does in My Side of the Mountain? Children will explore the wonders of survival in the woods in this session. Come learn how to build a shelter, locate food, and then find your way out when you’re ready to go home.

    This week-long 4th-5th grade camp session runs from August 4 to August 8, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm daily. What was it like to live without modern technology? Could you survive in the woods using just your skills and what you can carry? Would you know what to do if you got lost in the woods? Campers this session will figure out how to start a campfire, read trail maps, construct a survival shelter, identify edibles, and use map and compass skills.

    Explore non-native species that grow in our area with Nancy Slowik, invasive species specialist. These non-native plants, animals, and pathogens cause economic harm, environmental devastation or threats to human health. Learn where they come from and how we can reduce their harm during this free program for adults





    In cooperation with the Tenafly Environmental Commission and Green Team, Tenafly Nature Center will provide residents and interested parties with a series of free lectures and round table discussions regarding local environmental concerns and curiosities. Rain or shine. First Wednesday of the Month.

    Families will receive a set of clues to help solve nature riddles along the Nature Center trails. Each family will need to work as a team to complete the hunt and receive a small prize. Program is intended for adults and children 4 and up.

    By the light of the full moon, experience a guided 2-hour walk (approximately 1½ miles) along the trails. Participants will stop for a rest at the crossroads of the Purple and Allison Trail. This tranquil, meditative hike encourages reflection and connection with nature allowing hikers to experience the trails after dark. Recommended for adults.



    Pre-registration required. Please bring a flashlight. In case of inclement weather the program will be postponed to the following month.

    This week-long 6th-8th grade day camp session runs from August 11 to August 15, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm daily. Most of us don’t have the Midas touch, but we all have an impact on nature. Come learn how each of us affects the planet on local and global scales. Campers will learn about carbon footprints, sustainability, and ecological crises the world is facing as we head deeper into the 21st century. But don’t despair! We will also investigate solutions as we learn about these concerns.

    Families with children ages 3-7 will enjoy a nature-themed story and a visit from one of TNC’s Animal Ambassadors. Learn about the animal and how they came to Tenafly Nature Center. A new story and animal are featured each month. Animals may include snakes, frogs, turtles, owls or a hawk. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

    This week-long 4th-5th grade camp session runs from August 18 to August 22, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm daily. Animals transform themselves by losing gills, gaining legs or losing legs to grow wings. It’s not magic- it’s metamorphosis! Campers will explore the many organisms that use metamorphosis and learn what motivates them to undergo these transformations in this camp session!

    Learn how bats use echolocation to play a vital ecological role. Understand more about the only flying mammal in New Jersey through a presentation by a Tenafly Nature Center Environmental Educator. Then walk along one of our trails using a sonar detector to search for signs of bat life. Program is intended for adults and families with children 5 and up.

    Learn about backyard birds and how to identify them. Learn which birds might visit backyard feeders and which ones can stay for the winter. Learn which types of food will attract different species. Don Torino from Bergen County Audubon will share his extensive knowledge of birds with attendees in this free program for adults.

    Adults and families with children 4 and up; join a Tenafly Nature Center Environmental Educator to explore the centennial of the extinction of the Passenger Pigeon. See one of the few existing specimens in NJ. Passenger Pigeons were once the most abundant bird on the continent; their numbers were estimated close to 5 billion at their peak.




    Within decades, human actions reduced their numbers to zero. On September 1, 1914, the last of the species died. Learn ore of their story and construct a Passenger Pigeon totem pole for exhibit in the Nature Center Museum.

    Amphibian diseases are emerging at an accelerating rate in wild and captive populations of frogs, toads and salamanders. Join us in this program recommended for adults at the Tenafly Nature Center to learn what is causing the diseases and what impact disease has on local amphibian populations. Dr. Paola Dolcemascolo, who recently completed her PhD on amphibian diseases, will share some of her research and discuss the impact on NJ amphibians.

    Families with children ages 3-7 will enjoy a nature-themed story and a visit from one of TNC’s Animal Ambassadors. Learn about the animal and how they came to Tenafly Nature Center. A new story and animal are featured each month. Animals may include snakes, frogs, turtles, owls or a hawk. Children must be accompanied by an adult. 


    Meet on the visitor center porch. In case of inclement weather the program will be moved indoors.

    Gather ‘round the campfire to explore seasonal changes, listen to stores, and roast marshmallows for s'mores. A Tenafly Nature Center Environmental Educator will lead participants on a short walk along the trails in the forest without flashlights to develop night vision, play games, and listen for animals. Program is intended for adults and families with children 5 and up.

    Join a TNC Environmental Educator for a morning bird walk to look for migrating waterfowl, raptors, and other seasonal birds at Pfister's Pond and along the trails. Program is intended for adults and children 10 and up. Beginners are welcome.

    Trees are treasured for their beauty, shade and oxygen. When trees become victims of storms or old age they can cause property damage or hazards. During this free program for adults, learn how to take care of them and identify a possible threat. A visit from a local shade tree expert will clarify these issues and will help you determine when to seek advice from an expert.
