Our Seasonal Programs are the perfect way for families and adults to enjoy the seasons with TNC! 
  • For assistance with registration and information on our policies, please visit our Registration and Policies page.
  •  This symbol indicates that the program is held on surfaces that are accessible for people with mobility challenges.
  • TNC staff can adapt most programs for people of many different abilities. To request assistance of any type, please let us know a week in advance so we can ensure each person enjoys nature to its fullest.
  • We present these programs for families and adults. If you are part of a group of 10 or more participants and are
    interested in public program topics below, please contact our Education Director to organize a program for your group.

    New this spring!

    Home-schooled students aged 8-12 are welcome to join educators from Tenafly Nature Center, Flat Rock Brook, and Teaneck Creek Conservancy as we introduce your home school explorers to a plethora of plants and the interesting world of insects.


     Each month explorers will discover a new locale that is a part of beautiful Bergen County and explore the hidden gems within. Topics will range from basic botany to identifying aquatic macro-organisms and will feature hands-on/minds-on exploration perfect for a budding to intermediate naturalist. Meet other home school families while kids strengthen their knowledge and appreciation for the environment.

    This is a drop off program intended for students aged 8-12. Students should wear appropriate outdoor gear and sturdy, closed-toe footwear. Rain or shine; the program will take place indoors and outdoors. Please no hand-held devices. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

    Young children, 1 ½ to 3 years old, with an adult will explore the natural world through a series of topics lead by a Tenafly Nature Center Environmental Educator. Each week has a different focus emphasizing working together through discovery stations, songs and journeys outside. Eight week series on Wednesdays.

    Earth day is a day for us to strengthen our connection to nature, the land and those who came before us.  This earth day come and learn one of humankind’s oldest survival skills, fire by friction.  This difficult to master skill has been invaluable throughout human history and by learning this technique you are continuing a tradition as old as human history.  

    Program is intended for children AND adults. This is not a drop-off program.  If parent is going to participate they must pay, if parent does not wish to participate we request they stay on Nature Center property. In the event of rain this program will be rescheduled.

    This earth day celebrate a creature that gets a bad rap, Snakes! Slither over to the Tenafly Nature Center to learn all about adaptations that keep snakes alive and how beneficial these animals can be for humans!

    Experience a guided 2-hour walk (1½ miles) along the trails by the light of the full moon. Participants will stop for a rest at the crossroads of the Purple and Allison Trail. This tranquil, meditative hike encourages reflection and connection with nature, allowing hikers to experience the trails after dark. Recommended for adults.

    Space still available! Please arrive 15 minutes to start time (6:45pm) to register in person. We leave promptly at 7:00pm for the hike. 

    Pre-registration required. Please bring a flashlight. In case of inclement weather the program will be postponed to the following month.

    Start your weekend off right with Nature Yoga on Saturday mornings! Through a series of physical explorations and mindfulness techniques, participants will have the chance to gently explore and connect with the natural world and the self while surrounded by the sights, sounds, and scents of nature in our pavilion. No experience required; all abilities welcome! 


    Program is for individuals 16 and up. Please bring your own mat, and an optional light blanket. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held under cover. Register for an individual class or sign up for all 6!

    Family yoga is a wonderful way to experience togetherness, awareness, nature, and movement. Weekly themes include

     Practice and play as you connect with each other, the elements, and maybe even a plant or animal!     Eco-Cruises are fun, educational tours aboard Hackensack Riverkeeper’s specially rigged 30-foot pontoon boats.
    Captain Bill Sheehan started Eco-Cruises in 1994 to increase awareness of the lower Hackensack River as a vital natural and recreational resource. Since then more than 50,000 people have traveled with us. Eco-Cruises include 2 ½ hours on the water and are fully narrated by either Capt. Bill or Program Director Capt. Hugh Carola – both of whom are US Coast Guard-licensed captains


    This program leaves from the River Barge Park & Marina, located at 260 Outwater Lane in Carlstadt, NJ  Children ages 4 and up please.  Food & alcohol is permitted on boat, however no hard alcohol or red wine.

    Learn how bats use echolocation to play a vital ecological role. Understand more about the only flying mammal in New Jersey through a presentation by a Tenafly Nature Center Environmental Educator. Then walk along one of our trails using a sonar detector to search for signs of bat life.

    Program is intended for adults and families with children 4 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held under cover. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

    Celebrate Father's Day with a guided walk outdoors. Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast or just hoping to spend some quality time with Dad, a walk might be the perfect activity to celebrate this special family day. All ages welcome.


    Online registration is no longer available but limited space is still available. Interested families are welcome to arrive 5-10 minutes prior to the program start time to register and pay with cash or check.

    Excavate fossils directly from a matrix rock, create a shark tooth necklace, build a dinosaur model, crack open crystal filled geodes and find amber and Herkimer diamonds. This 3 day journey includes Gemstone Mining, authentic Fossil Digs, and fun
    fact-filled interactive presentations and hands-on projects. Children will see and touch a prehistoric, life-size T-Rex skull, 9 foot leg of an ice age mammoth, real dinosaur eggs, footprints and teeth, amethyst towers and more. They will take home genuine dinosaur bone specimens and other fossils, plus real gemstones, like rubies and emeralds.

    Program is intended for children ages
    5-12. Drop off program. Children should bring a refillable water bottle, and one snack. Students should wear sturdy closed-toed footwear. Layers and rain gear are recommended (rain boots, jacket, hat, etc.). Rain or shine. Children may attend individual days. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

    Mythology and fables illustrate how humans looked to the stars for explanations on how the earth was formed. Campers keep their feet on the ground and their eyes to the skies while exploring the solar system and our own home planet. Come and focus on the natural wonders our universe offers!

          • Complete the form submission through CAMPDOCS 7 days prior to the start of the camp session. New Jersey state law requires that campers submit a current health record each year.

          Failure to submit all forms to TNC 7 days before the first day of camp will result in forfeiture of your registration fee.

          Rocket Power

          When I was your age, Pluto was a planet! How did scientists determine it was classified incorrectly? Is there life in space? What living conditions are needed for a planet to be habitable? Campers will become astronauts-in-training and explore the secrets of space. 

          Nine week-long 3rd-5th day camp sessions available. Each week runs from, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm daily.

                Solid as a Rock

                Solids, liquids, and…gas! Through daily experiments and observations, campers will have an introduction to the three states of matter. Discovering how heating and cooling elements can change the state of an object, campers will head onto the trails to use the forest as a laboratory. 

                Ten week-long Pre-K & Kindergarten (4-5 yrs.) day camp sessions available. Each week runs from, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm daily [with AM (9:00 am-12:30 pm) or PM (12:00-3:30 pm) half day options available].

                Pre-K & K campers must be a minimum of 4 years old and bathroom independent. For the safety of our staff and campers, TNC staff do not go into the bathroom with campers.

                Nature's Heroes and Villains! 

                The fight between good and evil is not just for people with capes, but it is also a dilemma for the planet. Which animals help clean our water and which plants make us sick? Do people do more to help or hurt the environment? By the end of the week, campers will decide what makes a nature hero.

                  • Campers may attend multiple weeks. Each week will feature different activities.

                  • Extended Care may be provided before and after camp for an additional fee. This is not an extended camp experience. During this time campers participate in supervised, self-directed, indoor activities.

                    • Post-Care: 3:30-5:00 pm, $75 per camper per week.
                    • If registering for both Pre- and Post-Care, fee is discounted to $125 per week.

                  This is where you will tell us about your camper, fill out health information, emergency contacts, other important safety data, and submit the following required files:The Mandatory Health Packet: Universal Health Record from your child’s health care provider. 

                  Including an Immunization History:
                  • Please note, if your health care provider will not be including a complete immunization form the Health Department requires a written statement signed by the parent or guardian explaining how the administration of immunizing agents conflicts with the camper’s exercise of bona fide religious tenets or practices. General philosophical or moral objection to immunization shall not be sufficient for an exemption on religious grounds. 
                  • A copy of your insurance card.
                  • A copy of any information regarding your child's activity restrictions/special needs (ex. IEP, ISFP).
                  • Complete the form submission through CAMPDOCS 7 days prior to the start of the camp session. New Jersey state law requires that campers submit a current health record each year.

                  Failure to submit all forms to TNC 7 days before the first day of camp will result in forfeiture of your registration fee.

                  Summertime Safari

                  A safari is an expedition to observe or hunt down animals in their natural habitat. Campers will grab their backpacks and head out on a safari throughout TNC’s woods. Mammals, amphibians, invertebrates, birds, you name it campers will use their senses to track down local wildlife. 

                  Nine week-long 3rd-5th day camp sessions available. Each week runs from, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm daily.

                        Amazing Animals

                        Animals live with us, around us, and on all seven continents. Campers are introduced to some of the most amazing animals in five of the different classes; amphibians, reptiles, fish, birds and mammals. Each child will gain a new understanding of the world after imagining the underwater world of a fish or the soaring abilities of a bird!

                        Ten week-long Pre-K & Kindergarten (4-5 yrs.) day camp sessions available. Each week runs from, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm daily [with AM (9:00 am-12:30 pm) or PM (12:00-3:30 pm) half day options available].

                        Pre-K & K campers must be a minimum of 4 years old and bathroom independent. For the safety of our staff and campers, TNC staff do not go into the bathroom with campers.
